Our Trustees

The Board of Trustees of the Susan L. Curtis Charitable Foundation is an active and vital part of our organization. This dedicated group of volunteers work tirelessly on behalf of the Foundation and the children we serve.

Our Staff

MELISSA CILLEY, Executive Director

Melissa joined the Camp Susan Curtis team in April of 2011 after leaving Drummond Woodsum in Portland and Portsmouth, New Hampshire where she practiced in the Education Law group. Raised in Kansas, Melissa began her career as an actor in regional, dinner, and repertory theaters on the East Coast and in the Midwest. After several years “on the road,” Melissa began teaching early education. There, some particularly courageous children changed her path toward law and she returned to the University of Kansas (Go Jayhawks!). Following law school, Melissa represented exclusively children and their families in the Kansas City area. She moved to Spokane, Washington in 2001 where she enjoyed 6 life-altering years as the director of a non-profit providing legal advocacy and other services to abused children and their families. In 2007, Melissa moved to Maine and returned to law practice. Now happily back in the non-profit sector, she and her husband, Rodger, live in Portland with their 3 children (Elaine, Christian and Meredith), 2 cats (Adelaide and Scout, a.k.a. “Moose”) and their rescue dog (Andy).

TERRI MULKS, Camp Director

Terri joined the Camp Susan Curtis team in June of 2010 after a long career with the YMCA in Boston, Providence, and Alabama. Raised in the beautiful Finger Lakes Region of New York, Terri has always had a love and appreciation of the outdoors and an interest in passing it on to youth and families. Terri is a graduate of the Southern Connecticut State University Social Work Program and began her career as a Cabin Counselor and Ropes Course Manager at Camp Hazen YMCA during her college years. As a Senior Program Director and Camp Director with several YMCAs, she has been able to incorporate positive curriculum and learning with outdoor adventures and character development for hundreds of campers and their families. After 15 years in Boston, Terri and her husband, Jay, currently live in Naples with their rescued pets-lab mix Jackson, cat Perdi, and Gulf Coast Box Turtle, Mr. T. They are on a personal lifetime mission to explore all the National Parks by camping and backpacking through them.

LORI SOUTHWORTH, Director of Grants & Special Events

A member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Lori has more than 30 years of business and development experience with Portland, Maine area organizations, and has served with the Susan L. Curtis Charitable Foundation for the past 13 years, most recently as Director of Grants and Special Events. Prior to entering the nonprofit sector, Lori worked for Hannaford Bros. for 21 years in Research and Planning as a Senior Financial Analyst and Market Analyst. She earned a BA and MBA from the University of Southern Maine and is excited to have recently earned a Certificate of Graduate Studies in Nonprofit Management from the Muskie School of Public Service/University of Southern Maine. She also is pursuing CFRE certification. Lorie resides in Old Orchard Beach, where she enjoys community service, spending time with family and friends, and hobbies including writing, hiking and cross-country skiing.

JESSICA ELLER, Office Associate

Jessica joined the Susan L Curtis Foundation in April 2013. An avid supporter of camping programs and outdoor education, she is excited to be able to lend her skills to support the organization’s mission. Jessica brings over 10 years experience in administrative support and program coordination in non-profit organizations in Indiana, Ohio and Maine. She has worked in community, peace and justice organizations, and was a founding staff member of the Friends School of Portland. Jessica grew up in the Midwest and graduated with a BA in Peace Studies from Manchester College (Indiana). As a lifelong camp enthusiast, she looks forward to fostering a love of the outdoors in her 2 young sons.
