CAMP SUSAN CURTIS ENVIRONMENTAL & EXPERIENTIAL EDUCATION CENTER
Health Promotion & Risk Reduction, Physical Education - Students will understand how to enhance healthy behaviors by practicing and processing healthy decision making skills, personal & social interaction. Activities include: (Wilderness Survival, Team Building, High & Low Ropes Course, Hiking, Canoeing).
Science and Technology - Students will have a greater understanding of systemic environmental practices and education in areas such as: Forest Ecology, Water Ecology, Scientific Reasoning, Classifying Life Forms, Plant Taxonomy, Wildlife Study and the Earth. Activities include: Pond and Lake Ecology, Environmental Awareness Project, Map & Compass, Orienteering, Forest Canopy, Environmental Concerns, Nature Study, Leaf and Tree Identification, Natural Habitat, Recycling& Renewable Energy Practices.
Communication Skills - Students will understand that skillful communication can contribute to better health for themselves and relationships with peers, family and in their community. Activities include: (Low Ropes and Challenge Course, Trust Activities, Large Group Cooperation Development, Personal Leadership Development and Creative Expression through Visual and Performing Arts).
Decision Making and Goal Setting - Students will learn how setting personal goals enhances better decision making and personal health. Activities include: Maps and Compass, Wilderness Survival, Low and High Ropes Course, Personal and Social Interaction, and Team Building. This also includes “Bully-Proofing, Communication, and Refusal skills Conflict Solutions, classes, skits and team activities to enhance the classroom & school environment.
Participating schools have the option of choosing a 2, 3, 4, or 5 day format for their educational programming at Camp Susan Curtis. The work of the Education Center is designed to parallel the work we do in summer with Maine's most deserving children. It is an investment in your students and in schools, and supports building a safe learning environment. It is high-quality experiential education, leadership development and environmental education. As well, there is a volunteer component designed to connect parents, college students and local high school service learning groups with opportunites to help children in their own communities.
