Self-Esteem and Nutrition - Programs are designed to help increase self-esteem in children and improve their self-concept. Self-esteem and body image can be closely connected, especially for teens, affecting their relationships with peers and adults. "If you have a positive body image, you probably like and accept yourself the way you are. This healthy attitude allows you to explore other aspects of growing up, such as developing good friendships and challenging yourself physically and mentally. Developing these aspects can help boost your self-esteem." (www.kidshealth.org).
Exercise and Recreation - At Camp Susan Curtis, children ages 8-13 participate in more than 25 activities in 5 program areas:
At the Susan Curtis Arts Education Center on Kezar Lake, programs foster personal growth, emotional and physical wellness and cultural awareness through physical education and artistic self-expression. When combined with artistic programming, outdoor activities such as hiking and challenge ropes course activities both encourage an appreciation for physical health, the natural beauty of the Maine landscape, and artistic inspiration. Creative writing, visual and performing arts serve as sources of self-expression, validation, and self-esteem.
Self-Image - Specialized programming, which helps build skill-sets in problem-solving, team-building, self-reliance and self-esteem, plays a pivotal role at Camp Susan Curtis. In 2005, Camp Susan Curtis introduced Healthy Lifestyles for Girls ("Girl Talk"). This course teaches positive life choices in the areas of relationships, nutrition and exercise, and personal development. The program focuses on developing self-esteem, a trademark of the traditional Camp Susan Curtis program, while working to alleviate the effects of social pressures to which girls are especially vulnerable.
5-2-1-0 - Emphasis on health, nutrition and well-being is exemplified by the 5-2-1-0 program of the Let's Go Coalition of Maine: 5 - Eat at least five fruits and vegetables a day; 2 - Limit recreational TV or computer use to two hours or less; 1 - Get one hour or more of physical activity every day; 0 - Drink less sugar. Try water and low fat milk instead of soda and drinks with lots of sugar. Visit www.letsgo.org for more on 5-2-1-0.
USDA - We are a USDA Summer Food Service Site. According to the USDA, "Summer can be a real challenge for families with limited resources. Family food dollars must be stretched even further...The USDA's Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) is designed to bridge the "nutrition gap" when school is not in session."
