Since 1974, Camp Susan Curtis has been providing tuition-free experiential education for economically disadvantaged Maine children. More than 550 children, ages 8 to 16 attended Camp Susan Curtis last summer in one of four two-week sessions. Camp Susan Curtis offers the positive experiences and environment that many children need to develop self-esteem, a sense of belonging and achievement.
Camp Susan Curtis is an investment in the future of our children. Each student-camper is referred by school and child development professionals. Our team approach creates a helpful support system for each child.
Children can choose from among 25 activities in 5 core programming areas. Activities take place in a strengths-based environment and are designed to enhance the emotional intelligence and self-concept of our student-campers. Social skills training is incorporated into all camp experiences and mirrors the curriculum in Maine’s public schools.
The collaboration among families, schools, Camp Susan Curtis and the community enables us to provide valuable mentoring experiences for each child. Most children return every year. A child who comes to Camp Susan Curtis at age 8 may well be involved in Camp Leadership in their teens and twenties.
Camp Susan Curtis provides well-rounded age-appropriate programming and activities on two campuses: Trout Lake in Stoneham for traditional camp and leadership programming; and Kezar Lake in Lovell where teens are immersed in Leadership Skils Training, Performing, Visual, Creative & Fine Arts (Painting & Drawing, Film-making, Digital Photography, Theatre, Dance, Pottery and more).
Both campuses involve student-campers in Experiential and Adventure-Based Activities (Canoe & Backpacking Trips, Ropes Course, Group Challenge), Environmental Education (Nature Study, Water Ecology, Environmental Awareness, Service Projects) and Traditional Fun Camp Activities (Waterfront, Boating, Sports, Group Games & Campfires).
Our diverse and experienced staff is comprised of educators, former student-campers, and college- aged students with a background in education, social work or environmental education. All of our counselors and counselors-in-training are “there for the kids”.
Camp Susan Curtis is nestled in the spectacular White Mountains of Maine. The 2,200 acres of protected forest is situated on crystal clear Trout Lake. The CSC Arts Education Center at Hewnoaks is located among towering white pines on the shores of Kezar Lake in Lovell.
