The Susan L. Curtis Foundation is an independent, statewide 501C-3 founded in 1971 as a non-profit charitable organization and named for the daughter of Governor Kenneth M. Curtis and Pauline B. Curtis. Today, the Susan L. Curtis Foundation endeavors to overcome the effects of poverty- a devastating disease of the spirit which can cripple a child’s dignity and self-esteem, thus becoming a barrier to education.
Today, we seek to help lift Maine children out of the cycle of poverty through outdoor experiential education.
The supporters who were instrumental in the creation of the Foundation have always believed that summer camp is a critical element in a child’s education, and that underprivileged children deserve a chance to be successful. Their vision became Camp Susan Curtis, a safe haven where young spirits are nourished, and where people believe fully and unconditionally in them and their future.
With a small staff and modest resources, the Foundation has inspired many young lives and continues to have the support of thousands of Maine people, businesses, service clubs and civic organizations. The Susan L. Curtis Foundation works to ensure that children can develop self-esteem and a powerful self-concept through outdoor experiential education and mentoring.
The Foundation works year-round with educators and other child development professionals to give these deserving children a "hand-up" in life enabling them to have a chance to realize dreams and, in turn to “pass it forward” in order to help provide leadership for Maine.
