Portland, Maine: Celebrating 35 Years of Teamwork to Improve the Lives of Maine Children in Need was the theme of this year’s dinner and dance to benefit the Susan L. Curtis Foundation and Camp Susan Curtis. The Susan L. Curtis Foundation offers a wide range of curricula including arts, adventure, nutrition & wellness, environment, science & technology, leadership and outdoor experiential education for Maine children in need. According to President & CEO Alan F. Cartwright, eighty percent of Susan Curtis student campers return each year; of those who return for four years and learn leadership, eight out of ten enroll in college.
The March 27th event at the Holiday Inn by the Bay drew 369 guests; Master of Ceremonies, WGME 13’s Kim Block directed the program that included speaker Sonja Bowie, an Asst. Vice Pres. at Unum and Susan Curtis alumnus. Following the program, dance music was provided by the ever-popular Bob Charest Band. “Our Annual Dinner and Dance is an important part of our fundraising efforts,” says Development Director Lori Southworth, and this year’s event exceeded expectations, raising more than $130,000. Proceeds support 25% of the children attending camp each summer. Event organizers included Unum’s Ann Powell Hibbard as Dinner Chair, TD Banknorth’s Dave Bronson as Host Chair and Program Chair Cary Olson Cartwright, also with Unum.
This year’s Visionary Sponsors were SW&B Construction Company, LLC and FairPoint Communications, Inc. Benefactors Cianbro Corporation, Helen Cianchette, Martin’s Point Health Care and Unum were well represented at the event. Harry Crooker & Sons, Inc., KeyBank, L.L. Bean and Purdy Powers & Company returned as Sponsors. Patrons included Bank of America, Jake’s/Hayloft Restaurants, Ken & Polly Curtis, Shaw Brothers Construction, Inc., TD Banknorth and Time Warner Cable. The Foundation is indebted to the many businesses and individuals who supported the event; a list of table hosts is shown below.
Camp Susan Curtis was founded in 1971 by friends of then Governor Ken Curtis and his wife Polly Curtis in memory of their daughter Susan. Susan Curtis programs now take place on two campuses: Trout Lake in Stoneham and Kezar Lake in Lovell. More than 550 children and teens attended last year to learn about leadership, the arts, life skills and raising aspirations, all at no cost to their families. The Mission of the Susan L. Curtis Foundation is to build the individual character, self-confidence and self-esteem of economically disadvantaged Maine children through the provision of tuition-free, high-quality educational, social and camping experiences.
Please contact the Foundation at (207)774-1552 or visit www.susancurtisfoundation.org for more information on how you can help send a child to camp today and create a leader for tomorrow!
